Supermarket Chain Southeast

In planning for a complete retrofit for the lighting systems in their distribution centers, a major supermarket chain, with over 1,000 locations throughout the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states, put together a team that consisted of representatives from each area of a distribution center.  Their number one priority?  A lighting system that offered a safe, comfortable working environment for employees.  Photometric brightness was another key concern.  “Good readability of labels and good color recognition are important in helping employees choose the right product,” explained the Distribution Maintenance Manager.  “Energy was also important, but it was not our driving force.”  The company selected Amtech Lighting Services to manage this challenging assignment, and Amtech was up to the task.

After meeting with representatives of the customer and analyzing the distribution centers, Amtech decided to use T5HO fluorescent fixtures to replace the high-pressure sodium fixtures that were in place before.  In addition, the T8 lamps were used in the office spaces within the centers.

Compared to the dull, yellowish glow of the high-pressure sodium fixtures, the T5 lamps provided the white light that the customer wanted.  Amtech’s re-lamping period was 6 years, resulting in huge maintenance savings for the client; in truth, the T5’s are about 45% more energy efficient based on pure wattage, and with the inclusion of occupancy sensors, the savings are pushed even higher.  “The total energy reduction related to the new lighting is around 65%, incorporating the sensors,” noted the manager.  “Plus, the lights generate significantly less heat, decreasing electrical needs by about 20% in refrigerated parts of the warehouse.”  Lastly, it is important to note that the costs of the initial retrofit investment were spread out over the maintenance contract, thus the customer avoided high up-front cash expenditures in this endeavor.
