Challenge
Bridgeport-Spaulding Community School District needed to modernize its facilities. HVAC systems, including boilers, chillers, and unit ventilators, were failing, with some air-handling units over 50 years old. Certain areas lacked air conditioning entirely, creating significant comfort challenges for students, faculty, staff, and community members who relied on the spaces. Like many districts, Bridgeport-Spaulding also had limited capital to fund these much- needed upgrades, so its leadership team sought a partner who could both identify financing options and manage the system overhaul.
Solutions
With decades of experience in K-12 facilities, ABM delivered a contracting approach that leveraged energy savings, operational efficiencies, and capital cost avoidance to make the upgrades possible. By capturing savings from LED lighting retrofits, water conservation measures, controls, duct sealing, transformers, and building envelope improvements, ABM helped offset the cost of the district’s extensive mechanical needs. The project also went beyond HVAC. ABM upgraded lighting and controls at the football stadium and basketball gym, and introduced color-tunable classroom lighting to create inclusive, calming environments for special needs students.
